Adrian Graffy is a Scripture scholar and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. On 9th July 2022 he gave a study day entitled ‘Jonah: prophet for today’. The event happened with in person participation and was also live streamed on the whatgoodnews.org website. Fr Adrian explained that the book of Jonah is unique among the prophets in being ‘didactic fiction’ and containing only a handful of prophetic words. The story of Jonah is of an Israelite who stubbornly resists God’s desire that mercy should be offered even to the Assyrians, the arch-enemies of Israel. In two lectures Fr Adrian leads participants through each of the four chapters of the book. The lesson for today, that God offers a message of mercy to all, is sorely needed in a world where nationalism and hatred are fostered. God has pity on ‘the 120,000 people of Nineveh, who do not know their right hand from their left’.
