In May 2022 Pope Francis canonised ten new saints, and among them was Charles de Foucauld. On 8th October 2022 Little Sister Kathleen McKee, a member of the Fraternity of the Little Sisters of Jesus in Walsingham, led a study day on ‘St Charles de Foucauld – universal brother’. Little Sister Kathy traced the life of brother Charles on a journey of faith which led him from military life, to Nazareth, to a Trappist monastery and finally to the Algerian Sahara, where he preached the gospel with his life. In the second session Little Sister Kathy spoke about the spirituality and the legacy of brother Charles. In Fratelli Tutti Pope Francis wrote: ‘St Charles directed his ideal of total surrender to God towards an identification with the poor, abandoned in the depths of the African desert. He wanted to be, in the end, ‘the universal brother’.
