Fr Vincent Twomey gave a presentation of the life and legacy of Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) in a live stream presentation from Ireland on Saturday 20th May 2023. Fr Vincent first met Joseph Ratzinger in 1971 and met him regularly as part of a ‘student circle’ until Benedict’s death in 2022. Fr Vincent explained his background in twentieth-century Bavaria, the young Joseph Ratzinger’s academic career and his contribution to the direction of the Second Vatican Council. Joseph Ratzinger became archbishop of Munich in 1977, and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome in 1982. He was elected pope in 2005 and resigned in 2013. In a second talk Fr Vincent reflected on the dynamics of the liturgy using many of the insights of Joseph Ratzinger.
