The Gospel of Matthew

Lindisfarne Gospel of Matthew

This talk on the Gospel of Matthew shows how this gospel builds on the Gospel of Mark. Matthew is much longer than Mark, and includes traditions apparently unknown to Mark, who wrote the very first gospel. Matthew adopts the basic story of Mark: the initial ministry of Jesus in Galilee is followed by the journey to Jerusalem, where Jesus faces death. Matthew superimposes on the basic marcan structure five speeches of Jesus, the first of which is the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew also prefaces the story of the ministry with the so-called ‘infancy narratives’, in which Joseph is the main figure. Fr Adrian also illustrates how Matthew adds to the story of the Passion, with a particular emphasis on the role of Judas, and the place of Gentiles like the wife of Pilate.
